“The ability to accurately pinpoint a delivery time to the minute removes a lot of debate with our customer’s clients.”
Benefits of Navman Wireless
- Increased security for their drivers and their customers
- More accurate reporting of driver time and kilometres travelled
- A platform for launching more technology
MOVE Logistics Ltd has been operating in the Christchurch and greater South Island regions since 1988 and in Auckland since 2007. They offer a wide range of services including container cartage, inventory management, order pick up, processing and delivery and supply chain consultancy.
Based on MOVE Logistics’ solid reputation in the industry, Lion Nathan Liquor approached them in mid-2006 to discuss liquor delivery around the Christchurch region. Because one of Lion’s key considerations is security, MOVE suggested putting tracking technology in their delivery vehicles.
Brendan Prendergast, Managing Director of MOVE Logistics, says, “Navman Wireless was a brand I knew of with a good name. They had the tracking and reporting solution we were looking for and helped us secure the delivery contract in both Christchurch and Auckland.”
Navman Wireless Tracking is currently installed in 10 trucks. It will soon be installed in 8 more trucks in Auckland.
Increased Security for Their Drivers and Their Customers
“As Lion’s merchandise is highly tradable, we need to know where it is at all times, says Mr Prendergast. “Navman Wireless Tracking enables us to replay a day’s activity so we know exactly where a truck goes from the time it picks up from the brewery, makes all its deliveries and returns to the brewery.”
This visibility offers a number of additional benefits. If the Lion call centre wants to know where an order is, a MOVE team member can look at the OnlineAVL 2, see the truck and give an approximate ETA.
“There’s less noise in the office because we make fewer calls between driver and call centre,” comments Mr Prendergast.
MOVE’s drivers appreciate Navman Wireless as well. Mr Prendergast explains, “Drivers never felt that we were snooping when we installed the solution. They believe that tracking gives them credibility. If someone suspects something untoward, a driver knows they have the reliability of Navman Wireless records to show just where they’ve been.”
More Accurate Reporting of Driver Time and Kilometres Travelled
Navman Wireless records when a truck is on so MOVE Logistics can easily validate driver start and finish times. They can also monitor kilometres travelled. This information helps with purchasing the correct road user licences and will help with claiming RUC from LTNZ.
“We look at individual trucks and where they’re travelling to make sure the workload is fairly shared,” states Mr Prendergast. He continues, “We’re also sharpening turnaround times since we know how much time a truck spends at the brewery. By reporting these times to Lion, they can streamline their processes and we don’t waste time waiting.”
A Platform for Launching More Technology
Navman Wireless has become a good marketing tool for MOVE Logistics. “Our tracking capabilities helped sell us into the Auckland market and will definitely help with rate reviews because we can show the true kilometres we travel and how much time we spend making each delivery,” comments Mr Prendergast.
He concludes, “We’re working closely with our Navman Wireless dealer who has been integral in making the system work for us and making it work with other technology we use. We’ve got more ideas lined up for the near future and trust that Navman Wireless will provide the visibility and cost savings we’re looking for.”
