“Now we can see how everyone is tracking against their schedules and when ‘hotspots’ occur, we can direct our energies to where they are needed. We’ve got a complete view of the entire business - right down to every individual truck.”
Benefits of Navman Wireless
- Easy to install and operate
- A centralised view increases efficiency
- Improved customer confidence
Express Couriers Limited operates 90 heavy to medium sized transport vehicles of various configurations.
Dave Clarke, Northern Region Linehaul Manager, explains how they needed an off-the-shelf product that they could, in simple terms ‘plug in’ and operate. “A lot of systems were still being developed and only Navman Wireless was in a position to deliver everything we required,” says Mr Clarke.
Express Couriers Limited has a Messaging Data Terminal (MDT) in every truck with the more advanced Messaging and Navigation Device (M-Nav 650) in their Auckland Bulk Truck Metro fleet.
Mr Clarke says, “Navman Wireless gives us an excellent centralised view of our network and lets us know where our trucks are at all times enabling us to make real-time decisions precisely when and where they’re needed. This has a direct influence on on-time performance, more effective management of the fleet resources and most importantly cost management.”
Easy to Install and Operate
Jason Gilgen, Road Transport Operations Manager, comments on how easy it was to install and use Navman Wireless. He says, “It didn’t take long for each of the tracking and messaging devices to be installed. Our Navman Wireless dealer helped us set up an installation plan and it was executed perfectly - 90 trucks in two weeks.” Many of Express Couriers’ contractors and drivers weren’t necessarily computer literate, but they understood how Navman Wireless worked right away. Now all the contractors use the OnlineAVL 2 to watch their own trucks.
A Centralised View Increases Efficiency
“Before Navman Wireless, we used RT’s, mobile phones and local intelligence to determine where our trucks were. Now, with Navman Wireless technology, there is no guesswork and we get a precise picture of the entire business,” states Mr Clarke.
In addition to the contractors, Express Couriers’ managers and dispatchers around the country use the OnlineAVL 2 and various reports. “We run replay-a-day, mileage, trip and idle reports constantly, looking for that extra five minutes that will increase efficiency,” says Mr Gilgen.
Improved Customer Confidence
The transparency that Navman Wireless provides has increased customers’ confidence in Express Couriers. Mr Clarke comments, “By seeing our trucks 24/7, we can alert customers to a delay in real time. You can’t afford mistakes in this business and Navman Wireless gives us the ability to present facts.”
Navman Wireless is becoming a strong selling feature to both existing and potential new customers of Express Couriers. “Navman Wireless demonstrates to these customers that we are keen to invest in this type of technology to ensure their business experiences that competitive edge. It also highlights our drive toward fuel efficiency, reducing our carbon footprint, and the safety and wellbeing of our people,” concludes Mr Clarke.
